Quest to make money in the Adult Business

Post 3 - Getting Set Up

So we now know:
- What TGP Galleries and freesites are,
- What our general aims are and
- That we need to make freesites and TGP galleries

Before we move on here are some short term objectives that we will work through:

Our short term objectives:

  1. Choose a niche.
  2. Get a domain name for your first site (Recommend Godaddy)
  3. Get a reliable host for your site (Recommend Powerstorm)
  4. Learn about SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  5. Learn about making freesites and galleries

1 Choosing a Niche

Before you rush ahead and choose a domain have a think about what your site will be about. Quite simply it will be about porn but if for one second you think you can jump in there and just make general porn then you are wrong. Porn is very competitive and the best way for you to break into the business is to choose a small area of porn to focus on. This is because it is better to be a small fish in a small pond than a small fish in a massive pond filled with lots of really big fish. Not sure what I'm saying? Well put simply if you try and be a general porn site your going to have much bigger competition than if you choose something more specific. This is especially important when it comes to search engines (something I will get onto at a later date).

So we need to pick a niche but what should we pick? Pick something that you will be interested and know about as you will be working with it a lot. If you are into anal porn for example then choosing to work in the anal niche will make more sense than working in the cumshot niche as you already have some more experience in the anal niche as a surfer (so you know what surfers want to see) and you will probably enjoy it better than seeing something you like less. So choose a niche you like be it gay, foot fetish anal, panties or whatever.

2 Choosing a Domain

Whatever your choice you make you are going to need to register a website domain for your site (e.g. domain.com) and find a company to host your website on the internet. If you don't know what a domain is or what hosting is then you need to find out. A good tip if you are unsure of any term is to type "define:term I don't understand" into google and it will search for a definition. Alternatively you can always ask in a forum.

Once you have decided on your niche you should register a domain name that reflects it well. Things that are good in a domain:

  • Short and easy to remember.
  • Contains a keyword related to your niche.
  • Is preferably a .com or secondly a .net - try and avoid less well know domains for now.
  • Does not have a hyphen (-) in it e.g. dirtyporn.com is better than dirty-porn.com

Having said the above don't fret too much about it, your domain is such a small part of your site and will probably be one of many that you own if you stick in the business. It is just better to try and get something good rather than bad. However your domain will by no means be the key to success. Look at www.link-o-rama.com, It's not really a fantastic domain but its a fucking successful site!

To register your domain you need a registrar. I recommend GoDaddy or Namecheap. They are both cheap and cheerful and do the job.

***Once you choose your domain feel free to post it here in the forum to let us know***

3 Choosing a Host

You will also need somewhere to host that domain. It is important to make a wise choice when choosing your host. Cheap is not always good, you are going to need need support from your host at some point and you need them to be reliable. If you don't make the right decision it will cause you stress later and could lose you money. So make a good informed decision and read around the boards and ask for recommendations (remember a lot of these recommendations will come from the actual hosts themselves so be careful). If a name keeps propping up use them and if you know someone in the biz see who they recommend.

I recommend Powerstorm as a host. They are very cheap but more importantly have fantastic support. I was really impressed with the level of service they offer and how quickly they deal with you. They have a dedicated chat room which 90% of the time someone is there to give you an answer. They have even helped me with issues not directly related to them. They have packages starting at $9.95 a month which is very good value and will be enough to get you started as you can upgrade at any time.
